There’s a real buzz in the DT Department already this term as the children get going on a range of projects.
In DT we pride ourselves on providing children with a modern curriculum at the cutting edge of technological advances, but we also appreciate that traditional practical skills are valuable and that the tangible nature of the subject can be hugely rewarding.
This term pupils have been given the opportunity to work on a range of woodwork-based projects in the workshop, supported by our new technician, Mr Wivell. Prior to joining Hazlegrove, Mr Wivell worked at Poisdales as a bespoke cabinet maker and has made furniture for celebrities and also the Queen of Jordan! The children are thoroughly enjoying his input into their projects and are already planning a range of items, some of which include outdoor seating, coffee tables, puzzles and rocking toys for Pre-Prep.
Recently, we have introduced a Textiles Club. As part of this we are entering an international quilt competition, the Festival of Quilts, and the finished work will be hung in the NEC in Birmingham. The theme of the competition is 'Memories' and will be made up of old Hazlegrove uniform and clothing. The children will design their own embroidery images using industry standard software and will be able to use our NEW computer-aided embroidery machine. Each of the patches will be embroidered with children's own memories of their time at Hazlegrove and I think it will look fantastic.
This is a sneak peak of the quilt in its very early stages...
What an exciting time to be in DT at Hazlegrove!
Mrs Barton.
