Our four brave mathematical ambassadors worked incredibly hard at the Bryanston Maths Challenge
Four intrepid young mathematicians donned their thinking caps to compete in the annual Year 6 Bryanston Maths Challenge.
This competition is divided into three rounds. The first round is called 'Find the Value' which is a series of progressively more difficulty algebra puzzles involving some tricky substitutions and little bit of common sense. The second round is called 'Countdown' which runs of the same lines as the popular TV series and requires the children to manipulate given values until they can reach a specific target number. The final round, called 'The Big Event', was a selection of 20 maths word problems that started out easy but quickly became really tough.
Twenty five different local schools attended the competition and each school brought four competitors that are divided for the afternoon into pairs, competing in two distinct ability groups. Our four brave mathematical ambassadors worked incredibly hard for two and half hours without any breaks and I was very proud of them. They really got into the spirit of the afternoon; they took it seriously but they also seemed to be having a lot of fun.
In the end our blue team, comprising of Justin W and Imogen H, came 8th in their division and our red team of Jasper G and Ludo C came 6th in their division. A highlight for me was their determination during the final round where both pairs managed to really distinguish themselves getting some of the top scores in the room.
