Four Hazlegrovians made up one of 28 teams at the Grand Final of the Flying Start Challenge at the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton.

The Flying Start Challenge is an engineering competition in the South West of England held annually for 11-13 year olds, to help them develop key skills and increase awareness of the careers available in engineering. The core of the challenge is for the children to design and build a hand launched glider which can fly the greatest distance.

George M, Max S, Lucas M and Otis S did a brilliant job, received certificates and were awarded Industrial Cadets Bronze Award. Overall they came 7th out of 28 teams - they should be very proud.

Mrs Barton said: “We have done this competition for two years in a row and this is the second time we have managed to get through to the Grand Final and they’ve been so enthusiastic. The children really enjoyed it and have given up their break times and lunch times to come and work on it and it has been absolutely fantastic. It contextualises the maths and science and makes it a bit more relevant.”

Otis S added: “What I liked the most was building the glider because it I thought it was really fun. I also liked testing, because I got the pleasure of seeing the glider working well. Because our project has been successful, we know that we could do it again in the future.”
