The final sports news round-up for the year...
A round-up of the sports news as we head off for the summer holidays...
Cricket
The boys have certainly enjoyed their cricket this term and despite a few wet afternoons and soggy wickets the enthusiasm for this sport has been very pleasing to see. The 1st XI enjoyed an exciting T20 match against Giggleswick that had to move to the Bastion astro; I think the broken tile on the Pre-Prep roof was testament to how hard they all hit the ball! They managed to win the game on the penultimate ball of the match – certainly a close and tense finish.
The fields have remained scattered at breaks and lunchtimes with both boys and girls practising their catching and batting skills.
Rounders
We have continued to be disappointed by the summer weather this term and yet again we have lost a number of our fixtures to the rain. However, it was super to see so many girls out representing the school on the penultimate Saturday of the term. The Year 8 and 7 teams all enjoyed some excellent matches; demonstrating what a fun and skilled game rounders is. The Under 13 girls won in convincing style and it was a very fitting end to their Hazlegrove sporting career for these girls. Fingers crossed for better weather next term!
Athletics
The Somerset County Junior Championships clashed this year with our Year 8 Leaver’s Trip. However our Year 7 athletes certainly made up for the fact the Year 8s were unable to be there. Hazlegrove had an amazing seven Somerset County Champions, who can now all proudly wear their champions badges; well-done indeed to Isaac P, Anya E, Robert K and to Kai S and Lily I who both won two events.
Congratulations to our 26 athletes who qualified to compete at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham at the National Prep Schools Championships. Congratulations also go to them for their excellent performances at those championships. A special well done goes to our two medallists who both took bronze medals after some very exciting and tough races in their respective 800m races. Click here for more photos...
Both Jake and Sam broke school records along with Isaac, Anya, Fred, Pandora and our Year 8 girls’ 4 x 100m relay team.
Biathle
Hazlegrove certainly claimed a lot of the honours at the recent National Schools Biathle Finals. We had four individual age group champions – Sam C, Anya E, Fred F and Skye F and we won all team categories that we entered – Year 4 girls, Year 4 boys, Year 5 boys, Year 6 boys, Year 7 girls, Year 7 boys and Year 8 boys. A really lovely day was had by all of our 34 competitors.
Next term we start on the winter Biathlon event – a separate swim and run (distances vary depending on the age group). We will be running internal competitions as well as many training and ‘have a go’ events.
Finally, we wish Mrs Evans, Sam and Anya well as they head out to Portugal to compete for Great Britain in the European Biathle Championships – will any of them defend their 2015 titles?
