Sports news round-up at first exeat
In has been a busy start to the term for the sports department and there have been some challenging weather conditions with hail and snow one minute to bright sunshine the next!
Cricket
The cricket season has started off well with some notable performances from all of the teams throughout the school. We were delighted to host Pridwin Prep, a school from South Africa earlier in the week; they certainly experienced the crazy extremes of the British weather – from hail and snow to bright sunshine!
Rounders
Congratulations to the Under 13 team who won the Port Regis tournament last Saturday, against 9 other schools – a great start to the season.
Tennis
It is great to see the courts being used at break and lunch times. We enjoyed our first tennis match of the season against All Hallows last Tuesday; the Year 8 team were busy playing both doubles and singles.
Athletics
Last weekend 10 Hazlegrove athletes competed at the Somerset County Combined event championships. Year 7 athletes had to all compete in 100m, Shot putt, Long jump and 800m and Year 8’s had to do Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Putt, Long Jump and 800m. After two very long days, with the children all performing admirably amongst fields of over 50 the scores are added together. Fred F was crowned Somerset County Champion and Kai S and Chloe H also gained top ten finishes. Notably performance were overall wins in the 800m and new personal bests for Kai S, Fred F and Harriet T.
Riding
Last Friday four of our school riders headed up to Buckingham to compete in the National County Challenge finals. To compete here they had to win our County Final which they did back in February. There were 32 counties competing and they were of course not only representing Hazlegrove but also Somerset.
They all competed in a warm up class on Friday evening and then the main competing on Saturday. All four of the girls rode brilliantly and our team finished on a total of 4 faults, placing them in 8th place overall – congratulations to Lily, Anna, Olivia and Evie.
Olivia was also competing as an individual and out of the 138 competitors she finished 3rd – a hugely commendable achievement.
We look forward to a busy rest of the term with lots of Hazlegrove children competing for the school.
Biathle
We will be running some ‘Introduction to Biathle’ events at school next week for the children in Years 4-8; There are a number of events happening later in the term and we are keen to enter school teams. Please do contact Mrs Cobb if you think your child would be interested. They involve a continuous run, swim, run – distances vary depending on the age of the children.
