A fantastic term for all sports...
It has been a fantastic term for all sports. Here is a round-up of the news...

This has been an amazing rugby season. Each year the quality of Hazlegrove goes from strength to strength. This is largely down to the wonderful attitude of all of the boys in their training sessions and in the matches. I would like to suggest that in terms of skills and attitude we are unmatched on the circuit – a wonderful achievement, well done. All boys who have represented the school this term have done so with good grace – playing hard and fair; gracious whether we have won or lost and courteous hosts and guests. Congratulations must go to a number of teams. The U9 and U8 have had a super season developing the basic skills and learning about the game. The U10’s have built on all they learnt last year and have gone from strength to strength. The U11 boys have had to learn a new way of playing and have developed their handling and running skills. It has been a joy to watch a number of boys from the 3rd and 4th teams playing so well in the House Matches. It was clear to see how much progress has been made. The 1st and 2ndXV’s have excelled themselves and have been two of the best sides that Hazlegrove have seen over the past decade.

This has been a fabulous term with so many of the Hazlegrove girls developing a real passion for the sport of hockey. As well as demonstrating improvements in individual skill levels, what has been so nice is to see the camaraderie that is shown by all of the girls towards each other. Success on the hockey pitches has been hugely rewarding and our U12, U11 and U10a teams have all had unbeaten seasons in school fixtures and this is a very commendable achievement when we think that this spans right back to September. The Year 3 and 4 girls all enjoyed playing in the Hazlegrove tournaments last Saturday, when we welcome 18 teams from local prep schools. We were delighted that our U9b team won their tournament and that the other girls all enjoyed the morning.

Biathlon - National Finals in Solihull
Congratulations to the Hazlegrove children who competed so well in Solihull. The real highlight was Anya Evans gaining a superb bronze medal in the under 13 girls age group. We look forward to hearing how many of our school teams have qualified for the National Schools Finals that take place just before Easter at the Crystal Palace Sports Centre in London.
Cross Country
Thirty Year 7 and 8 Hazlegrove children took part in the Yeovil Area District trials at King’s Bruton.
The course was very challenging and muddy and for most this was their first experience of real cross country racing. We were racing against all of the schools in the Yeovil district and in most races there were around 50 competitors. In the first race, the Year 7 girls, Hazlegrove got off to a flying start and certainly dominated having the first 8 finishers. With Anya winning, Kai second and Eloise third, closely followed by the whole team. Next it was the turn of the Year 7 boys and again we had some brilliant results with Fred winning, Aled second and Carlos in third. Next up the Year 8’s and for them they race against Year 9’s as well. The girls went first and Harriet finished in a very commendable second place after a close race. Then it was the boys turn and Sam won what proved to be a very exciting race against a significantly bigger Year 9 boy!
In all we have 25 children who have qualified for the Somerset County Championships that take place at the end of January; a very impressive achievement by all of those that competed so well. Now all of the runners need to keep themselves fit over the Christmas holidays!
Riding
We have had a busy term with many inter-schools competitions. The Somerset County Challenge took place on Sunday and saw 50 different schools taking part and in most classes over 120 competitors. It was a very long day and everyone was trying to earn the first place spot and qualification for the National Schools Finals which take place in April next year in Buckinghamshire. I am delighted to report that Hazlegrove won class 2 in very close competition (by just 1.2 seconds in fact). Well done to Olivia, Lily, Anna and Evie – a fantastic achievement.
