A brilliant Friends' Bonfire Night with some very gruesome guys!
Bonfire night at Hazlegrove is not just about enjoying a wonderful evening socialising with friends, enjoying the delicious food and drink by the massive bonfire and watching a spectacular fireworks display… it also means that it has been the time for the fiercely contested annual guy building competition – a task inspiring huge excitement among many of the children and staff alike and perhaps some trepidation amongst those whose skills lie elsewhere!
This year, the children were tasked with a theme for their guys of “The Thing – that which lurks, just out of sight, in the corners of your imaginations…”. Marks were to be allocated for the name, the description, the imaginations and creativity and the build quality. There were some fantastic creations from the scary Mr and Mrs Headless Horror created by the Year 3 classes via The Recyclosaurus (a rare type of dragon which grazes on pencil sharpenings, paper scraps and old whiteboard pens) to those created by the older pupils such as Nessie McFly (the Loch Ness Monster has wings who travels to the Bermuda Triangle where the touch of his tongue results in instant death), The Gigantamaggotosaurus – the bed engulfer (a mighty beast who lurks beneath your bedframe waiting for you to fall asleep) and Phobophobia (a phobia of all sorts of phobias manifested in a spooky piece of installation art!). The fabulously gruesome descriptions of these guys had to be abridged in some cases so as not to scare some of the younger children present.
Once the serious business of judging the guys was complete, the guys were carried in a torch-lit procession to the bonfire to meet their grisly fate! Bonfire ablaze, we then enjoyed the wonderful array of food and drink on offer. Curries, hog roast, popcorn and toffee apples were all available as well as hot chocolate, beer and mulled cider! The evening was rounded off with a spectacular firework display.
Many thanks go to the Friends’ committee who put so much time and effort into organising such a wonderful evening, ensuring everything ran smoothly and for their stupendous efforts in helping to clear up the following morning in time for the rugby matches to take place!
