Year 8 "Quantock Challenge"
On Tuesday this week we took all of Year 8 up to the Quantock Hills – An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to take part in our own version of the Exmoor Challenge – “The Quantock Challenge” - where pupils had to test out their navigation skills.
Setting off in five minute intervals in groups of 6-8 they had four checkpoints to pass and a quiz to fill en-route. With maps, compasses, emergency rations and first aid kits what could go wrong? Well, for most - nothing, although one group of girls initially failed to make the first check point, let alone the last! A couple of groups decided to take an even more scenic route to the finish but everyone arrived to the final destination safely (eventually!). It was a great day out giving an opportunity for the children to not just enjoy the beauty of the Quantock Hills but also for them to take more responsibility for their own safety and well-being.
The weather was perfect and it was so good to see the Somerset countryside at it’s very best. Overall a lovely day was had by all and it was a fitting end to the Year 8 children's time at Hazlegrove.
