Hazlegrove Remembers...

The Hazlegrove community came together to honour those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Headmaster, Mark White, led the service with a prayer and there were readings of ‘The Fallen’ by Lawrence Binyon, ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae and ‘The Soldier’ by Rupert Brooke given by Mr Cobb, Mrs Mahony and Colonel Vigne.

‘Father, we ask that you would comfort those who mourn, particularly on this day, as they remember family and friends. Give strength to those who continue today to go and fight in wars so that we and our children, many enjoy the freedom that we know today. Amen’.

The ‘Last Post’ was played by Michael J as the flag was lowered to half-mast, then we observed one minute’s silence in respect and contemplation. Nye J played the ‘Reveille’ and then twenty-eight children, from Year 2 to Year 8, laid poppies made by the Pre-Prep children, at the foot of the flag pole in remembrance of the 28 men who have attended Plox and Hazlegrove and who died during WW1, WW2 and the Afghanistan War.

There have been other events occurring around school in the lead up to our Remembrance Service. In DT, children in Year 5 and Year 6 have designed and made their own unique poppies using the laser cutter. They looked at WW1 imagery to give them ideas to engrave onto plastic. They are very heartfelt as well as creative, each one is completely unique, bound together with aluminium wire and will be worn with pride and reverence. 

In the Pre-Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 were visited by Mr Stok. WW1 was brought to life through the many artefacts Mr Stok brought to show them. ‘The Remembrance Service gives us time to reflect on the people who died for us. It is a service that is important to people from the past, but we must carry on with this service as it is just as important to families today’ - Ottilie S - Year 8.
