The pastoral care of our children at Hazlegrove is at the heart of our ethos and all staff are involved and responsible for ensuring the children’s positive sense of self and wellbeing. The children are immersed in a caring community surrounded by adults who show respect and integrity in their daily interactions and who go out of their way to put the children first. Happy children are successful learners who have the confidence, resilience and humility to face and overcome challenges in their educational journeys.
A Tailored Pastoral Approach
Our tutors are the children’s greatest advocate; they are their first port of call at the start of every day and importantly, the first point of contact for parents. The tutors meet weekly to discuss pastoral issues, and the Pastoral Leadership Team (made up of the pastoral Heads of Pre-Prep, Lower School, Middle School, Upper School, the Head of Boarding, the Deputy Head and the School Psychologist) meet twice a week to discuss individual children and wider pastoral issues.
Guiding Our Children
Tutor times, assemblies, RE and PSHE lessons are the more formal avenues through which we support our children’s social and emotional development and guide them in their spiritual and moral journeys, helping them to become caring and conscientious global citizens. Our ‘Circle of Care’ shown above illustrates the depth and breadth of the pastoral support for our children at Hazlegrove.
Our dedicated and passionate staff model thoughtful and respectful behaviours and inspire our community to enact our values of integrity, courage, grace, kindness, generosity and respect which underpin all that we do at Hazlegrove.
We encourage and promote kindness through our school values; through assemblies and tutor time, Chapel and PSHE lessons. Friday Celebration Assembly provides a wonderful platform to celebrate acts of kindness and courage as well as other achievements throughout the week. We acknowledge specific examples of our school values through awards such as ‘Lower School Legend’, ‘Middle School Marvel’, ‘Upper School Good Egg’ and ‘Boarder of the Week’, and the Kindness cup is a much-coveted prize at our end of term Final assembly. Pre-Prep and Lower School further recognise and celebrate children who demonstrate our school values in their weekly section assemblies. Across the school we also have ‘Wise owls’ in Lower school, Middle School ‘Transformers’ and Upper School Monitors, specifically wellbeing monitors, who display generosity and kindness towards others.
Pastoral care never ends and is something that works its way through the fabric of our school and underpins everything we do at Hazlegrove.
