Year 6 Geography for Spring Term
In Geography this term Year 6 are comparing the impact of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and the tsunami that hit Japan in March 2011, looking at how early warning systems, technology and preparation made a difference, and to what extent a country’s level of development has an impact on this.
It has been a fascinating topic, much enjoyed by the pupils, and has led to us making some poignant contrasts. It has been good to learn about how and why the countries around the Indian Ocean are now better prepared for tsunamis than they were 20 years ago.
In a few weeks, we will begin our map skills unit, looking at skills such as using 4 and 6-figure grid references, measuring distances, understanding scale and using map symbols. Year 6 will consider how vital these are in successfully using digital and paper-based maps.
