Sawing through wood and the sky in Year 2
With the sand still in our trainers we have wonderful memories of our trip to the beach last week.
Those memories have helped us enjoy a new book called ‘Flotsam’ by David Weisner. A fabulous story of a boy who finds a magical camera on the beach. As the story has no text, the children have been able to create their own narrative and let their imagination run wild. The illustrations in this story are very detailed and encourage the children to stretch their thinking and really examine each picture.
Our design talents were also used this week when we constructed 3D photo frames and our measuring and sawing skills were called upon. We had to use the correct stance and make sure we held the saws correctly to saw through the wood and end up with a straight edge. The next part of the design process saw us constructing a frame to put our cardboard decorated outer frame onto. It was a delicate process that took patience and precision.
A visit from Captain Skingsley was a highlight. He had us flying over the Brecon Beacons in a wildcat helicopter, trying out night vision goggles and having an insight into the four things every good soldier needs to remember - protection, location, water and food. Many excited whoops could be heard during the flying experience and hands reaching out to touch things in the Helicopter – what a special experience!
