This week the Dragonflies and Ladybirds have begun our new topic of 'Summertime', which will lead us up to the Summer holidays.

We looked at journeys we might take during the Summer. Last week, some of the children took the journey to Noah's Ark Zoo Farm and were up close to animals of all different sizes. The children discovered animals that we might find in many different habitats. This week, we have been thinking about making a journey through a jungle. We looked at the story 'Jungle Jamboree'. It is a beautiful story where the jungle creatures try to change themselves, however, the story ends when all the animals recognise that they are all lovely just the way they are, and that kindness in the most beautiful thing of all. The children then looked at pictures of animals and shared any facts they already knew about these animals and also spoke about what they noticed, using the pictures. They listened to a traditional African song from Botswana and learnt a song called 'Come to the Serengeti'. We have finished the week, creating their favourite animal that is found in a different habitat, using different materials and paint.

This week the Butterflies have been focusing on the story "Hooray for fish". This story has given the children an opportunity to think about differences within their school and home community as in the story there were many different coloured, sized and patterned fish. We discussed hair and eye colour, types of hair, skin colour, clothing, and height and size difference. The children then got creative and designed their own patterned fish using a range of craft materials. They thought about what type of fish they had made, we had Zog fish, happy fish, stripey fish, and spotty fish. The children have also spent time 'fishing' in 'sea foam' and describing the types of fish they had caught, discussing whether they were the same or different and counting how many they had found. In Forest School, they created boats to help the small world dolls go on their own fishing adventure and in music they have been learning a variety of under-the-sea-based songs and dances.
