The Boarders compete to crack Mr Shaw's Murder Mystery
Super sleuths and daring detectives!
Early on Sunday morning Mr Shaw was lurking around the streets of Crewkerne placing clues for the brilliant Murder Mystery that he had devised for the boarders!!! Whilst we were all sleeping he was hard at work tying up the clues on park benches, stapling them to trees and fastening them on to large gates outside fire stations. By 7 o'clock in the morning the scene was set as Mr Shaw placed his very last clue on the far end of the playground where he thought no one would be able to find it.
After a delicious full English breakfast we finally departed for Crewkerne. As we arrived we were split into eight groups, each with an adult to help where they could. After a short briefing by Mr Shaw we were all ready and raring to find out who the killer was, what weapon they used and where they had committed the crime. The prize for the winner was a giant chocolate cake.
As quick as you could say ,"Jack Robinson" we were off combing the streets of Crewkerne searching for those all important clues. We ran up and down alley ways, church lanes and old fire stations as fast as we could trying to gain any advantage over our opponents. The local residents were very helpful with giving directions and thought the task was absolutely marvellous. Teamwork, perseverance and determination were the buzz words for the day and luckily children from Hazlegrove have those qualities in abundance. After 2 hours of intense activity we all met back at our rendezvous point to find out who the winners were.
Mr Shaw made us wait until after lunch to reveal the results. In the spirit of sharing he decided to have two winners. When he read out the final placings an almighty roar went up because the children had realised they had won the massive cake.
After all the excitement of the morning the children had a great afternoon playing on swings, sliding down slides, throwing frisbees and playing some football. It was a real pleasure watching children just being children making up their own games and enjoying each other's company.
When we finally returned to school the winners "had their cake and ate it!" The rest of us had some hot chocolate and then settled down for a film.
Mr Farquhar delivered a very memorable chapel emphasising the importance of forgiveness and that humility and being kind to others are qualities that we should all strive for.
A big thank you must go to Mr Shaw for all the time and effort he put into making a wonderful activity for our boarders to enjoy. Huge credit also goes to the children for the way they conducted themselves throughout the day. Older pupils looking after younger ones, being polite and courteous to members of the public. It was and always is a pleasure and a privilege to look after such incredible young people.
